BioWhite - Scale-up of cellulose micro particles

The scale-up of a very challenging laboratory synthesis of white pigments was achieved. After optimization, process definition and careful equipment selection, the white micro cellulose particles were successfully produced at 100L scale.

Titania nanoparticles are currently used as a base for most white pigments. However, those particles are facing regulations in health-sensitive industries and are lacking biocompatible alternatives. Yang et al. have developed a patented, cellulose white pigment for use in cosmetics, food and pharma formulations.[1] Although the synthesis of this cellulose white pigment at laboratory scale is straightforward, its scale-up is challenging low volume yield, poor yield, high total product cost, long cycle time and low throughput. Currently, the scale-up was successful until the 100 L scale. This project was financed by Innosuisse and was done in collaboration with Lukas Schertel and his team (now Seprify).
